FAQs

THE SYMPOSIUM

What is ISFO 2027?

ISFO is the International Symposium on Freeway and Tollway Operations - the global forum where managers, traffic engineers, practitioners and researchers share how they manage traffic on the world's busiest freeways and tollways. The 5th edition comes to Melbourne in 2027, the first time the symposium has been held in Australia.

When and where is it being held?

ISFO 2027 runs from 25–28 May 2027 at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre (MCEC), on the banks of the Yarra in Melbourne, Australia.

Who organises the symposium?

ISFO 2027 is cohosted by ITS Australia and the Transportation Research Board (TRB), under the TRB ACP20 Standing Committee for Freeway Operations, with support from the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning.

Who should attend?

The symposium brings together road and freeway operators, traffic engineers, transport agencies, tollway operators, technology providers, academics and researchers from around the world. If you plan, build or run motorway networks or research how they work, ISFO is for you.

REGISTRATION

Are there discounts for members or students?

Yes. Reduced member rates apply to ITS Australia members and TRB-affiliated delegates across every category.

PROGRAM & SESSIONS

What does the program cover?

Across four days the program features executive plenary sessions, special interest sessions, workshops, technical tours and social functions, shaped around five key topic areas:

  • Global Perspectives on Freeway and Tollway Management
  • Technological Innovations
  • Event and Disruption Planning
  • Sustainability and Resilience
  • Road user charging, road funding, procurement and contracting

Will there be technical tours?

Yes. As in past editions, technical tours give delegates a first-hand look at how the host region manages its motorway network, including Victoria's managed motorways and traffic operations facilities. Tour details will be added to the program.

Will presentations be available afterwards?

Where presenters give permission, session materials are typically made available to registered delegates after the symposium. We'll confirm arrangements closer to the event.

TRAVEL & VENUE

Where is the venue?

ISFO 2027 is held at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre (MCEC) in the South Wharf precinct, a short walk from Melbourne's CBD and well served by tram, train and road.

Will accommodation be arranged?

A range of hotels sits within walking distance of the venue across the South Wharf, Southbank and CBD precincts. We expect to share recommended accommodation options and any delegate rates closer to the symposium.
